Malaysia boasts an exotic tropical flora & fauna, a multi-cultural population of diverse ethnic groups and a unique history, especially the Malaysian state of Sarawak. All these influences are reflected in Sarawak’s kaleidoscope of food and flavours, which earned Kuching the recognition as UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy. Enjoy a guided walking tour around Kuching and let yourself be introduced to the heritage and culture of the city by sampling its signature dishes.

Your guide will meet you at the hotel around 09:00 am. Together you will explore Kuching’s sights such as Chinese temples, colonial buildings, as well as the Waterfront, while at the same time tasting Sarawak’s local delicacies. One of the dishes you must try is ‘Sarawak Laksa’, a slightly spicy broth with rice noodles, shredded chicken meat, sliced omelette, bean sprouts and a couple of prawns on top. Another all-time favourite in Kuching is ‘Kolo Mee’, which is a noodle dish with minced pork and often topped with a few slices of barbecued pork.  Stroll along Main Bazaar, Chinatown and India Street, where you can try some sweet treats such as ‘Apam Balik’, a sweet pancake with crushed peanuts, ‘Pisang Goreng’ (banana fritters), or ‘Kek Lapis’ (layer cake) which comes in many different flavours and colours. Here you will also find the colourful spice market. Your guide will show you the various different spices and explain their use in the local cooking to you.  Embark on a ‘sampan ride’ (small wooden boat) to Kubah Ria market, the biggest daily market in Kuching. This place is teeming with agricultural and jungle produce such as fresh vegetables, herbs, exotic fruits, wild honey, meat and poultry, as well as fish. There is also a foodcourt and several hawker stalls, offering local dishes and snacks. As the noon heat rises, enjoy a fresh coconut or some ‘ABC’ (abbrev. for ‘Air Batu Campur’), a refreshing dessert consisting of shaved ice with sirup, diced fruits and jelly bits. During this half-day tour of about 4 hours you will realize the important role that food plays in Malaysian social culture. Did you know for example that the Malay greeting “Sudah makan?” literally means “Have you eaten?”. With the head full of new information and the belly full with nice food, you will return to your hotel.
