Bung Jagoi Homestay
per person
Spend a night in a local homestay and discover one of the oldest Bidayuh mountain village.
Bung Jagoi is one of the oldest Bidayuh villages in the region of Bau. The villagers belong to the ethnic group of the Bidayuh, or more correctly to one of the many Bidayuh subgroups referred to as Bijagoi. The village was established sometime in the 1840’s by Bidayuh, who fled from an area called Bung Bratak due to raids and attacks by Iban warriors. They resettled on a saddle of Mount Jagoi (~480 metres), where they built their houses around a ‘Baruk’ (a ceremonial house/hut). As the village flourished and grew over decades, the villagers started moving to the foothills due to space constraints and easier accessibility, thus founding several new villages such as Kampung Duyoh, Kampung Serikin and many more. Today the old mountain village is a popular weekend getaway for locals and in the ‘Baruk’ visitors can learn about the heritage of Bung Jagoi and the Bijagoi people.
Kuching - Kampung Duyoh
Depart Kuching around 08:00 am for a drive of approximately 1 hour to reach the village of Kampung Duyoh. Upon arrival, you will check-in at a local homestay and be introduced to your host family.Â
One of the villagers will become your guide to bring you on a hike of about 1 hour along farm and forest trails to the old mountain village of Bung Jagoi. Although most of the inhabitants have moved to the villages at the foothills, some maintain their old family homes in the mountain village for weekend getaways and to plant fruits, vegetables or flowers that enjoy the slightly cooler climate up there. You will spend some time exploring the village, as well as climbing to the summit (another 20-30 minutes’ walk) to enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the undulating limestone outcrops, lush green forest canopies and surrounding villages.
Descend back to Kampung Duyoh. A typical native lunch will be served.
After lunch you will have the chance to cool down in a nearby mountain stream, take a stroll around the village or simply relax and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere in the village.Â
In the late afternoon you will join your host in preparing dinner and enjoy the meal together. A perfect opportunity to get to know your host better, as well as learning about the local cooking!
Overnight at your host’s homestay.
Waterfall Trek - Kuching
After breakfast, your guide will bring you on a trek of about 1.5 hours to reach a nice waterfall. Enjoy a dip in the fresh crystal-clear water, surrounded by the tropical rainforest! In the meanwhile, your guide will prepare a picknick lunch cooked in bamboo. You will be amazed how simple bamboo tubes are used as pots to boil meat, rice and/or vegetables in them over a camp fire!
Take your time, lean back and enjoy the serenity that these beautiful natural surroundings provide.Â
Trek back to the homestay to freshen up. Then it’s time to check out and bid farewell to your host. Transfer back to your hotel in Kuching (expected arrival around 04:00 pm).
