Kuching

The flair of Kuching is as unique and interesting as its history, which sounds like right out of a fairy tale book with stories of rich sultanates and oppressive rulers, head-hunters and pirates, European adventurers and the “White Rajahs”. Strolling along the Sarawak River and its Waterfront, you will discover a great mix of impressive modern architecture, charming colonial buildings, colourful Chinese temples, as well as historical old shophouses, which are typical in Southeast Asia. Small streets and side alleys lead you to the bustling India Street as well as Chinatown. Cross the river on a ‘sampan’ (a traditional river taxi) and you will find yourself in a Malay residential area with traditional houses on stilts.

The unique history, as well as the multi-cultural population of diverse ethnic groups are reflected in Sarawak’s kaleidoscope of food and flavours, which makes Kuching a heaven for foodies. In fact, Kuching has been listed as “Creative City of Gastronomy” by UNESCO since 2021! So don’t miss to try some tasty local delicacies!

Kuching is the perfect base to explore some of Sarawak’s must-see places, such as Bako National Park, Kubah National Park, Semenggoh Nature Reserve or the peninsula of Santubong with its beaches. The capital city is also the gateway to the home lands of the native Dayaks. Visit a Bidayuh village or venture on an overnight trip to an Iban longhouse while in Sarawak to get to know the local culture!
